Hitachi self-encrypting drives, those with the optional Bulk Data Encryption
feature, provide hardware-based data security and enhanced secure erase
capability. Self-encrypting drives scramble data using a key as it is written
to the disk, then descramble it with the key as it is retrieved, giving users
the highest level of data protection available. It also speeds and simplifies
the drive re-deployment process. By deleting the encryption key, the data is
rendered unreadable, eliminating the need for time consuming data-overwrite.
Hitachi is working with the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) to ensure our
products conform to the TCG Opal industry standard specification.
Adoption of the standard brings interoperability and more widespread
support.
Benefits
- Faster setup time because the drive is built to encrypt data with no feature turn-on required.
- Enhanced scalability in multi-drive scenarios because encryption is handled by the drive, eliminating the performance bottleneck of traditional solutions.
- Interoperabilitybased on industry standards versus unique chipset and processor solutions.
- Portability is improved because there is no system-level dependency-- the encryption engine is inside the drive.
- System Performance is improved because the encryption workload is moved off the processor and chipset and onto the drive.
