In conjunction with World Environment Day 2008, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies ( Hitachi GST) is pleased to announce a
renewed commitment to environmental affairs. This commitment is evident in
the certifications and awards we have received, the activities we organize
and the products we produce.
Eco-Factories Certification and GREEN 21 Awards The Hitachi Group's Super Eco-Factories certification for production facilities
took effect in 2007. This initiative will promote industry-leading environmental
action and develop pioneering case studies by recognizing the efforts of Hitachi
sites to reduce their impact on the environment. Within the Hitachi Group,
Hitachi GST has achieved Super Eco-Factories certification status in four of
its nine plants in 2007 ( Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and China).
In addition to the Super Eco-Factory award, the Hitachi Group has also awarded
the GREEN 21 award to Hitachi GST plants in the Philippines in 2006, Singapore
in 2007 and China and the U.S. in 2008.
The GREEN 21 award program, which focuses on advanced environmental activities,
products, and services, was established to energize environmental activities
and apply successful examples to the entire Hitachi Group. Eligible for awards
are top environmentally friendly products and technologies, as well as facilities
with groundbreaking energy and resource savings and recycling.
Environmental Activities Hitachi GST sites around the world will embark on a worldwide effort to improve
the local environment where we operate and increase environmental awareness
among employees and the local community.
We will promote worldwide environmental activities such as education and
awareness, working with the local schools, tree planting, river and reservoir
clean up, reducing the carbon footprint in our offices, beach clean ups and
car pooling.
Environmental Consideration in Products In early 2008, Hitachi GST announced the Travelstar™ 5K320, a 2.5-inch,
5400 RPM drive with a maximum available capacity of 320GB. Designed to support
the multi-tasking needs of consumers and commercial users balancing mobile
computing and movies, music, photos and games on-the-go, the Travelstar 5K320
drive delivers the right capacity and performance options to meet the needs
of IT and consumer electronics manufacturers. It is Hitachi GST’s latest
Super Eco-Product.
EICC Membership To demonstrate our commitment to improve the environmental conditions in
our operations, products and supply chain, and to reaffirm our corporate social
responsibility goals, Hitachi GST has become a member of the Electronic
Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC).
The EICC has established an Electronic Industry Code of Conduct -- best practices
adopted and implemented by some of the world’s major electronics brands
and their suppliers. EICC sets forth performance, compliance, auditing and
reporting guidelines across five areas of social responsibility: labor, health
and safety, environmental, management system and ethics.
Hitachi GST will support EICC’s vision, mission, bylaws and operating
principles.
