The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation of the European Union (EU) entered into force on June 1, 2007. The goals of REACH include the safe handling of the most sensitive chemicals within EU commerce and the phase-in of suitable substitutions for the most dangerous chemicals within EU commerce. On October 28, 2008, the European Chemicals Agency, the EU agency responsible for implementing REACH, published the names of substances that are candidates for its Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list. As provided for by REACH, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) reviews its products to determine if any Hitachi GST products contain more than 0.1% by weight per article of any substance on the SVHC candidate list.

As appropriate, Hitachi GST will issue REACH Certificates of Compliance for its products.
