Hitachi GST (previously IBM Storage Technology Division) invented
hard disk drives in 1957, the start of an evolution of storage products
which are key to the information technology industry. Hitachi GST
is a major innovator in disk drive technology and storage, and it
is these technical innovations which maintain Hitachi's leadership
in the storage industry.
Today, disk drives can be characterized by the mantra, "smaller
form factors, faster, denser, cheaper: in an industry best described
by fierce competition and rapid changes. But in the midst of this
never-ending progress, one fact has remained constant: Hitachi GST's
leadership technology.
The following pages describe the role Hitachi GST has played in the
development of hard disk drive technology in the past decade as well
as projected future direction. Much of the advanced technology that
keeps Hitachi GST ahead of the competition originates from Hitachi's
San Jose Research Center located in San Jose, California. You are
welcome to visit the San Jose Research Center's home page or the home
page for Hitachi GST.
