| Hitachi GST researchers at the San Jose
Research Center have continually scaled down critical dimensions
of first the MR and then GMR read sensors to read progressively
higher areal densities in disk drives. In 1997 Hitachi GST announced
and shipped the first GMR head product, --- the era of GMR heads
had begun. The industry has readily accepted this GMR head technology
to the extent that essentially all disk drive products use the
Hitachi GST developed GMR head technology. New head designs
are developed using the same high volume tooling as the currently
manufactured Hitachi GST GMR heads for production disk drives.
These results give a high degree of confidence that Hitachi
GST will continue to produce high capacity drives using advanced
heads in volume to achieve 100 Gbits/in2 and higher in future
products. |
